Confindustria, Bonomi-Mattioli duel: the new president is voted

The 179 members of the general council will have 2 hours to elect Boccia's successor at the helm of Viale dell'Astronomia – Bonomi is the big favorite

Confindustria, Bonomi-Mattioli duel: the new president is voted

An online vote to decide who will be the successor of Vincenzo Boccia,
but above all who will have to lead the Italian industrialists out of the biggest global economic crisis since the post-war period.

Confindustria is also adapting to the state of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic and to designate its new president it relies on a technological platform that will allow councilors to choose from home and in safety who will be at the helm of the association for the next four years. It had never happened in the history of viale dell'Astronomia and the decision to opt for a remote voting mechanism was not free from controversy, but in the end the will not to stop prevailed.

Two candidates admitted to the count by the Designation Commission: the president of Assolombarda, Carlo Bonomi, and the current vice president of Confindustria, Licia Mattioli. The 179 members of the general council of the association will choose which of the two will occupy the chair of president. There will be two hours to vote: from 10.30 to 12.30, shortly after we will know who won. The correctness of the vote will be guaranteed by an electoral commission, drawn by lot among the arbitrators, and a notary. If all goes as it should, on April 30, the same online platform will be used to vote on the new president's program and team. However, we would like to remind you that according to the statute, the last word will go to the private assembly of delegates, convened on 20 May.

But let's take it one step at a time. For the April 16 vote, the big favorite in the race to succeed Boccia is Bonomi. This is indicated not only by the polls but also by the wise men of the Association who, in the letter of appointment, anticipated that "the candidate Carlo Bonomi appears to have a consensus higher than the absolute majority of the members of the General Council and of the votes of the assembly".

Numbers in hand and barring twists, Bonomi shouldn't have problems, having on his side the favor of most of the Lombard industrialists, including many of the Brescians who previously supported Giuseppe Pasini. However, the uncertainty deriving from an unprecedented voting mechanism weighs on his victory. In fact, online voting will imply a much wider participation than usual (you won't have to move to vote, but you can do it directly from your own home) which could affect the final outcome of the challenge.
