Confcommercio: household disposable income returns to 1988 levels

Il disposable income of Italian families returns to the levels of 25 years ago. This was supported by the Confcommercio Research Office in the update note on obligatory expenses.

According to the association's analysts, this year the per capita disposable income is equal to 17.300 euros, a level almost similar to the 17.200 in 1988. In 2014 the figure will be identical to that of this year. In general terms, disposable income in Italy collapsed to 1.032 billion euros, just one billion above 1988 levels, while a real turnaround is not expected in 2014, with a marginal increase to 1.036 billion.

The situation is even more serious if these data are related to those on expense. Between 1992 and 2012 - the analysis continues - the percentage weight of "mandated" (i.e. non-deferable) ones increased steadily with respect to total consumption, going from 32,3% in 1992 to 40,6% in 2013. XNUMX.

Confcommercio maintains that part of the increase in the incidence of compulsory consumption recorded in the last 20 years "is derived from a particularly marked dynamics of prices".

In general, the collapse of the consumption can be said to be "finished", next year there will be no recovery: after the drop of 2,4% in 2013, in 2014 there will be a drop of 0,2%. According to Confcommercio, consumption will remain unchanged until June next year.

“A VAT increase would hit the weakest groups with the risk of accelerating the transition from the economic crisis to the social crisis”, commented the president of the association, Carlo Sangalli.
