In 1971, director Adrian Maben presented – at the Edinburgh Film Festival – “Pink Floyd in Pompeii”, concert film made with the English band in the amphitheater of the Pompeii Archaeological Park a few months earlier. 50 years later, that same music has returned to resound live in the same amphitheater, for one of the stages of "Pompeii Echoes", an extraordinary celebratory journey of that concert film.
The Amphitheater of the excavations of Pompeii is a unique scenario, capable of giving spectators an immersive experience, generating suggestive interactions between the musical performance, the scenography and the magical atmosphere of the place thanks to the most advanced digital technologies.
The protagonist of this enthralling show was first Max Gazzè, who with a group of exceptional musicians and voices performed a tribute to Pink Floyd to pay homage to the 1971 film-concert, but there was also TIM which – in collaboration with Qualcomm – has made available to the public advanced Extended Reality techniques and innovative digital solutions based on 5G millimeter wave technology (mmWave) without which the show would not have been possible.
In fact, it was not a simple musical event, but a mix of music, lights and special images, in the evocative atmosphere of the Amphitheater, in a union between real and virtual, historical melodies and unpublished contents. The event, of which Master Art oversaw the artistic and executive production, OTR Live the artistic one of the concert e GSNet the multimedia technical and creative direction of the live experience, of which TIM was the Sole Sponsor and technological partner, is part of "Pompeii Echoes", a format conceived and produced by Magister Art, based on an idea by Ernesto Assante and Alberto Bruni was born to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the concert film "Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii" directed by Adrian Maben, which saw the historic English band perform in 1971 at the Pompeii Amphitheater in a memorable concert behind closed doors.
Thanks to TIM technology, spectators equipped with 5GmmWave devices were able to view 3D digital content in augmented reality simply by framing the stage with your smartphone, enjoying an experience that cannot be enjoyed with the naked eye. In fact, thanks to the low latency and high bandwidth capacity, millimeter-wave 5G makes it possible to create unique immersive experiences even during events with a high concentration of participants.

The event enjoyed free live streaming on ITsART, the streaming platform dedicated to Italian art and culture promoted by the Ministry of Culture, available on Smart TV, PC, Smartphone and Tablet. Even those who watched the concert from home in live streaming from the ITsART platform witnessed a special show: during the viewing, in fact, a camera equipped with specific sensors for augmented reality made it possible to create a correlation between digital content and real elements. In addition, the other spectators present at the concert were also able to enjoy the show with augmented reality effects with a Dedicated WebApp.
