EU Commission: only speculation on the EIB

The rumors about European Investment Bank are nothing more than "pure speculation". This is how the European Commission responds to those who argue that there is a plan on the table to strengthen the EIB through the use of 12 billion taken from the endowment of the EFSF state-saving fund. "We have not seen anything, nor have we heard anything about it", community sources say.

"Everything you read in the newspapers is nothing but speculation", they reiterated in Brussels, annoyed by what was written by the Spanish newspaper El Pais and taken up by various newspapers. “It seems that only today are they discovering that there is a European plan for growth”, they comment.

“The plan exists and it's called 'Europe 2020', signed in 2010 by all the member countries”. On the basis of this plan, among other things, investments of 3,5 billion euro are envisaged through project bonds, European bonds designed to obtain private capital to invest in major infrastructure projects. “Very soon we will see the first project bonds,” announces EU Commission spokeswoman Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen. “We will be able to attract capital and give a strong boost to growth”.
