The German government prefers a merger between the Commerzbank investee and the French BNP Paribas, according to the German weekly WirtschaftsWoche, which cited financial sources.
Discussions at the finance ministry are at an early stage and, according to the newspaper, the government (which has a 15% stake in the bank after rescuing it from the crisis) will not discuss the issue with Commerzbank's management before November.
No comment from Bnp Paribas and Commerzbank on the rumors. The German finance minister, Reuters reports, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Two sources familiar with the situation told Reuters on Wednesday that Unicredit had expressed interest in a future merger with Commerzbank in Berlin.
