Commerce: boom in street vendors in Italy

Italians love “markets”. This is what emerges from the research carried out by Unioncamere and InfoCamere by analyzing data from the Business Register. In more than three and a half years, itinerant trade has increased by 12,8% with over 22 more "stalls". On the other hand, the number of "shops" fell by 2200 units.

According to data from the Business Register, the queen province of itinerant trade is that of Naples. As of 30 June this year, there were 14.675 street vendors in the Neapolitan province, almost 3 more than in Rome. The province of Naples is also the one that has seen the greatest increase in percentage terms in the last three and a half years, registering +39,9%. On the podium of the provinces with the highest number of "stalls" we find Milan which is at an altitude of 8817.

Contrary to what one might imagine, it is above all the new stalls associated with the sale of flowers, jewelery and housewares that contribute to the increase in itinerant trade in Italy, which have increased by almost 40% to reach 66.375 units at the end of last June. On the other hand, the increase in traditional "stalls" linked to textiles, clothing and footwear was much more contained: +5% between 31 December 2011 and 30 June 2015, for a total of 76.201 units.

Partial setback for the food trade with the number of street vendors in this sector which in the last 3 and a half years fell by 0,5% reaching 35.828 registered businesses at the end of June.
