Climate: what scenarios after the G7 in Sapporo? No more plastic waste and for Italy ok to biofuels

Use of biofuels on a par with synthetic ones, stop plastic pollution by 2040. The G7 on climate and energy in Sapporo concluded with acts of goodwill and two medium-term objectives. Against the backdrop of the now recurring abandonment of fossil fuels by 2050. To give credit to the representatives of the more industrialized countries, we should finally glimpse a downward path in the fight against climate change. However, during the two days of discussions, the debate once again revolved around the 2015 Paris UN climate conference. The long document In addition to reaffirming those contents, the final aims to stimulate acceleration of the policies of individual countries.

Italy, represented by the Minister of the Environment Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and the deputy minister Vannia Gava, at the summit achieved a small success with the recognition of biofuels as strategic when in 2035 we will have to abandon petrol and diesel cars. Compared to the recent decisions in the EU, which have favored synthetic fuels, this time bio fuels have been considered similar to synthetics. Italy counts on the commitment of other countries to enjoy the positive economic effects on the long national supply chain. In a year's time, the climate summit will be held in Italy and the government - assuming it is the same - intends to present itself in good health in the ecological transition. Obviously he still has to perfect many acts starting from the application of the decree on the PNRR already passed to the Chamber and which goes to the Senate next week.

The G7 in 2024 under Italian presidency: opportunity to show progress

“We are satisfied with the recognition obtained by Italy with respect to sustainable biofuels, which we consider decisive for a gradual and functional energy transition to protect the economy and growth. The Italian presidency will be able to start again from here to advance decisively but pragmatically along the decarbonization path", said the deputy minister How are you doing. The dates of 2040 and 2050 are mentioned in the final document of the summit which also contains an appeal to the commitment of governments for greater impetus in national environmental policies.

But it is precisely on national economies and on investments in individual countries that the credibility of all those who participate in world summits is at stake. On the other hand, the many abandonments of the Paris agreements and certain choices with flavour sovereignist they are reducing confidence in the countries that had signed those agreements. More than one government in Europe, in Asia, in America has had to measure those commitments with the true costs of industrial processing. Pandemic and wars (not only the one in Ukraine) have also heavily conditioned the reindustrialization policies which in many parts of the world have not been started at all.

The G7 also asked IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) for a study on the innovation and sustainability of theoffshore wind. The source is widespread in Northern Europe and in Sapporo it has been judged as strategic and indispensable for abandoning fossils. As it happens, however, the Italian government is late on the so-called FER 2 decree which governs concessions and production capacities. “The strongest economies in the world – said the minister Piquet Fratin – must take responsibility for leading the international community in the fight against climate change. We need a sum of actions and behaviors of the various countries, a provision or a declaration of intent is not enough”. The affliction that one feels every time one reads the conclusions of these summits is in any case part of the desire to see quick and concrete actions to stop the decline of the planet. But it all just depends on who has the power to act.
