Climate and environment: parties commit to an advisory body in the next Parliament

The next Parliament it will have at its disposal a scientific advisory body on climate and the environment. The Italian scientists of the "Scienza al voto" group have extracted this commitment from the parties involved in the electoral campaign. The idea of a National Council for Science, Health and Climate has been going on for some time driven by the continuous emergencies and the need to dialogue with politics more effectively. Not that the Parliament and Chamber commissions and the Senate do not make use of experts of the various subjects. But the purpose of having a lean advisory body permanently available is more concrete. The representatives of the Committee, coordinated by Antonello Pasini physicist, climatologist of the CNR and coordinator of the group "Scienza al voto" met at the headquarters of the CNEL. Next Friday in a press conference they will announce the contents of the agreement. A fully-fledged pre-election agreement, also approved by the President of the CNEL Tiziano Treu.

The parties' commitment to the climate must dialogue with science

“We were positively impressed by the competence shown by the representatives of the political forces”, says Pasini, “apart from the differences on the solutions to the climate and environmental crisis, it seems to us that awareness of the seriousness of the crisis is now acquired. On the other hand tra drought and extreme events, its impacts are unfortunately visible on a daily basis". After all, politics turns to scientists to assess the damage caused by any calamity. Those assessments almost always translate into administrative acts, subsidies, support for the population.

The Committee brings together 18 of the leading Italian climate and environmental scientists and their contributions in recent years have also been invaluable in preventing dangerous situations. Unfortunately, Italy has to deal with historical delays, phenomena of territorial devastation, bureaucracy, colossal holes that Pasini and his colleagues would like to see quickly disappear. All parties supported the signing of the agreement. And it is perhaps to give full transparency, as well as making the parties responsible, that in the end the names of those present at the CNEL were disclosed: Paolo Arrigoni (League), Angelo Bonelli (Green Europe), Clare Braga (PD), Silvia Fregolent (Italia Viva and Third Pole), Alessandra Gallone (Go Italy), Gianni Pietro Girotto (5 Star Movement), Elena Mazzoni (People's Union), Anna Lisa Nalin (+Europe) , Nicholas Procaccini (Brothers of Italy).

Science has the project "Let's choose the future" ready

We thank the president of CNEL, Tiziano Treu” adds Pasini, “for having given institutional form to our proposal, and for hosting the press conference to present the agreement next Friday.” In summary, what did you say? “It is an agreement thanks to which we hope that our country too, – replies Pasini – following the example of Germany and the United Kingdom, will have a scientific advisory body to the Government and Parliament able to help the institutions fight against climate crisis e of environmental tourism decisively".

But is there also a problem of economic resources to be allocated to prevention? "Yes, we can help political forces to realize the visions democratically chosen by citizens, optimizing the resources to be allocated to solving the crisis and preventing the crisis from getting worse and condemning us to chase ever more frequent emergencies" he replies Leonardo Becchetti, economist, of the University of Tor Vergata. In the new Parliament, politicians will be oriented towards the most suitable solutions to keep cities and villages in place, and to avoid innocent deaths. In many cases it has been seen that they need it in order not to delay decisions and to be aware of the country's state of calamity. To this end, the scientists launched the campaign We choose the future . The initial consent to change register has been received. “Our Let's Choose The Future campaign recognizes that we have different ideas about the future, but explains that, to achieve them, we must all come together” he adds Cynthia Perrino CNR scientist. Let's see if this pre-election unit will survive September 25th.
