Civic choice, 8 parliamentarians pass to the Democratic Party

Minister Giannini: "Monti's great project made great sense, now it has exhausted its function" - Renzi: "Sharing can identify a common landing".

Civic choice, 8 parliamentarians pass to the Democratic Party

Eight MPs from Civic Choice move to the Democratic Party. After the informal rumors, today they made their choice and its reasons official. These are five senators (Pietro Ichino, Linda Lanzilllotta, Gianluca Susta and Alessandro Maran and Stefania Giannini, also minister of education), two deputies (Ilaria Borletti Buitoni and Irene Tinagli) and a deputy minister (Carlo Calenda). On the other hand, Benedetto Della Vedova, undersecretary for foreign affairs, and the former premier and founder of the party, Mario Monti, who last month unsuccessfully asked to join the group for autonomy, remain in the ranks of sc.

“It's time for all the reformists to come together – commented Giannini -. Monti's great project made great sense, now it has fulfilled its function”.

The parliamentarians leaving SC write that "while on the one hand Mario Monti's renunciation of political commitment on the front line and the abandonment of the movement he created made its rapid exhaustion inevitable, on the other hand the inspirational agenda Liberal Democrat on the basis of which people and movements had converged in this political project was largely taken over by the program and action of the Renzi government. The Renziano Democratic Party has absorbed the center of society even before the political one. It has absorbed the social and electoral base of Civic Choice which, in fact, in the European elections last May massively chose the lists of this new Pd. Thus the original raison d'être of the Civic Choice has disappeared, which risks being reduced to a small dedicated party. This is why we welcome Matteo Renzi's invitation to a common path and landing place and we believe that we must go in the direction that our voters have already indicated to us”.

“I greatly appreciated the loyal contribution made by the senators of Civic Choice – said the democratic secretary and premier Matteo Renzi – both on the path of institutional and economic reforms and on the occasion of the election of the Head of State. Sharing can identify a common landing place and a common path for change in Italy”.
