Three films nominated for review were released this week: Darkest Hour, Ella and John e The VegetableThe choice fell on the latter and the result is positive. The other two would certainly have deserved attention: the first due to the awaited acting test of its main interpreter, Gary Oldman in the role of Winston Churchill, the second because it was directed by Paolo Virzi, an excellent Italian director, and because the protagonists are of great quality , Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland.

The Vegetable it is an all-Italian genre of film, halfway between comedy and social denunciation, between the photograph of a corrupt, debased and disfigured country against that of a healthy, moral, attentive and supportive country. Fabio Rovazzi, the protagonist, definitely leans towards this second version but doesn't close his eyes on the first. Deserves attention a film which, while not enjoying a powerful promotion machine - sometimes unjustified with respect to the quality of the product offered - such as the one that accompanies the various Verdone, Zalone or similar, is able to offer a sufficiently comic film, light and attentive to the right point, without any concession to any kind of vulgar aping of everyday reality.

Directed by Gennaro Nunziante, the film tells the story of a young graduate in Communication Sciences with a strong sense of civic duty and legality struggling with the search for a job. Being young, with good university preparation and looking for a professional identity are three elements that often find it difficult to combine. A degree, even if in prestigious and difficult fields to obtain, today in Italy, offers almost no guarantee of employment. Fabio reaches the title in a faculty where it is particularly difficult to identify the correct employment opportunity. That's when he begins his personal ordeal, like that of thousands of young people who, in order to earn something, are forced to accept underpaid jobs, often undeclared, and without any prospect of development. The internship, which in other countries represents a fundamental training step, in this case means picking tomatoes in the company of young emigrants exploited by the usual corporal. In the end, however, this comic tale ends well, with its own pleasant moral, as one would like to think it could happen in everyday life.

The Vegetable flows well, excellent editing and discreet photography. The situations and the characters are credible (Luca Zingaretti is good). In short, enough to hope that new comedians can be affirmed on the Italian film scene.

As we wrote last time, we suggest re-watching a "milestone" film which, due to the subject matter, will be the center of attention in the next few days. It's about Fourth power by Orson Welles. Considered by many to be one of the most important films in the history of cinema. More than 70 years have passed since its release but it is still very topical and the theme of the role of what the major daily newspapers contribute to the political and social debate will be proposed by The Post, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, to be released on February 1st.
