Cinema: "Mission Impossible - Fallout", Tom Cruise always compelling

Author's judgement: 3 out of five stars

We parted with wishes for a happy return to the cinema after a hot summer off the big screen. Best wishes well placed: the start of the season promises well and the titles on the bill give us hope that we will see interesting films. The 75th edition of the Venice Film Festival (which we will talk about later) got underway in recent days and there will be no lack of pleasant surprises on this side either.

Just to resume the discussion: if cinema is pleasure, this week's film is worth double. It's about Mission: Impossible – Fallout , with the inevitable Tom Cruise in his sixth effort in this leading role (also for this occasion as a producer) grappling with the enemies of all time: terrorists and criminals with the obsession of wanting the evil of humanity to the nth degree . Too intricate to report the details of the plot where the CIA, MI6, governments and spies of various kinds are constantly mixed and even taking notes during the vision one would get lost in understanding who are the good guys and the bad guys, always ready to change sides. Of course, the only ones always on the right side are Ethan Hunt and his small group of loyalists of the IMF (Impossible Mission Forces) who always manage to get away with a thousand vicissitudes.

However, the story is believable and compelling: there are three charges of plutonium around ready to be inserted into nuclear devices intended, in the criminal mind of the terrorist leader, to cause a global tragedy, with millions of deaths in various parts of the world. The mission will consist, precisely, in preventing the diabolical plan from coming to fruition. In between, breathtaking chases (the one on the streets of Paris, in our opinion, is one of the best ever seen), surprises and fast-paced scene changes together with moments between the surreal comic and the sentimental. Furthermore, as is known, Tom Cruise shoots the dangerous scenes without the help of stunt doubles and, in some highly realistic sequences, it is easy to imagine the difficulties and dangers one runs. The end result is that the film is well worth the cost of the ticket and, perhaps, could aspire to be considered the best compared to the previous ones.

More than 20 years have passed since the first title of the successful series, directed by Brian De Palma, and since then it hasn't missed a hit at the box office: always a great success. The formula is simple and proven: breathtaking action scenes together with a classic action movie script and international intrigue. The genre action movie normally it requires an enthralling scene every ten minutes on average: in this case the limit is exceeded to the full advantage of a pressing pace, thanks also to the proven direction of Christopher McQuarrie.

We have mentioned the Venice Film Festival: we suggest you pay attention, in addition to the aforementioned Italian films in competition, to the films offered by Netflix. This is a relative novelty in the film production panorama for two reasons: the first concerns the quality of the titles offered (On my skin directed by Alessio Cremonini opening film, inspired by the story of Stefano Cucchi; The ballad of buster scruggs, a western signed by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen and, also in competition Romadirected by Alfonso Cuarón; out of competition instead to keep in mind for the next viewing The Other Side of the Wind e They'll Love Me When I’m Dead two films involving Orson Welles). The second reason is that these are titles that will have a double distribution system: first in streaming and then in theaters. According to rumors reported by Hollywood Reporter it could also happen that for some titles a reverse path can be imagined, with the release first on the big screen and then online. The cinema market, viewers and ways of viewing films are changing, it will be necessary to take note of this.
