Cinema: from Servillo to the Lion King, guide to August films

August by the sea? Well, at the cinema. For all those - and there are more and more - who spend the summer in the city, there is good news: the cinemas offer not only very pleasant air conditioning, but also the release - during the month - of well 34 new movies. Some of which belong to cartels, destined to make large profits or in any case to arouse strong emotions. Who among us has not seen, moved, the first version of the cartoon film "The Lion King", in the 90's? Well, after mid-August (21st) the new live action version of Simba's adventures will be released, in very high definition. The production is USA (Walt Disney) and the director, Jon Favreau, is the same as the Jungle Book: for the Italian version there are the voices of the singers Elisa and Marco Mengonias Nala and Simba, respectively.

Before mid-August, on the 8th, the first spin off of the saga arrives Fast & Furious, "Hobbs & Shaw", US-GB co-production, directed by David Leitch, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. After 8 films and nearly $5 billion in worldwide grossing, the film that was by Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker, is back in theaters and also promises well, especially for young audiences. Fast & Furious will reach another highly anticipated film of the summer, already released in Italy on August 1: “Hotel Artemis”, which marks the great return to the big screen of Jodie Foster. The film is set in the world of crime, in a near future context (2028), where there is a secret clinic reserved for a small circle of outlaws.

It also came out on August 1st “Dolcissime”, the film dedicated to the anguish and fragility of female adolescence: perhaps girls now would prefer to stay on the beach, but for those who want to see a film that tells their difficult age in a light and ironic way, the film by the young director Francesco Ghiaccio is there on purpose. The judgment of the critics, however, is flattering. Still on the female theme, albeit in a slightly more irreverent key, the American film "The revenge of the losers" is released on August 21st: the story of two "nerd" friends, who realize that they have dedicated little time to entertainment...

Returning to Italian films, the valuable trident formed by Toni Servillo, Valeria Golino and Carlo Buccirosso arrives in theaters on August 29th. The film “5 is the perfect number”, signed by Igor Tuveri, is a small Neapolitan fresco in Italy in the seventies. It has already been at the cinema for a few weeks instead new work by Pupi Avati, "Il Signor Diavolo", a horror film set in the 50s and very favorably received by critics. Among the other releases worth mentioning, on August 28th it is the turn of Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman with "Attack to power - Angel has fallen", while on August 22, the film on the story of the criminal Charles Manson, "Charlie Says", arrives in Italy. A fiercely feminist film, with only women as protagonists. Possible surprises "The guest", an Italian-French comedy to be released on the 22nd, "The Rider - A cowboy's dream", and above all "Diamantino - The strongest footballer in the world", a pyrotechnic film on the new life of a former star of football. It comes out on August XNUMXth and is a France-Portugal-Brazil production.

The summer cinema binge precedes, like every year, the expected appointment with the Venice International Film Festival, now in its 76th edition and hosted at the Palazzo del Lido: it starts on Wednesday 28 August and ends on Saturday 7 September. This year Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp arrive among others, but also the two famous musicians Roger Waters and Mick Jagger. The Rolling Stone stars in The Burnt Orange Heresy, closing film by Giuseppe Capotondi, while Pink Floyd will present Us+Them, documentary about his last world tour.
