China: green turnaround on CO2 emissions

Chinese President Xi Jinping - a few hours after the bilateral with US leader Barack Obama - will announce a historic commitment on the climate, i.e. the beginning of a national program which, starting in 2017, will limit and put a price on greenhouse gas emissions. Basically, whoever produces gas will pay for it.

The news was released by the New York Times, which cites a US administration official as a source, according to which the move will create a cap-and-trade system to limit CO2 emissions - already tested in Europe and California -, which represents a great step forward in reducing pollution from large industries.

The environment is evidently the issue on which agreements between Obama and Xi are simpler. Already last November, in Beijing, the two presidents had announced an agreement on the reduction of coal emissions.
