China: January inflation above expectations, +4,5%

China's inflation grows beyond expectations. The annual rate rose last month to +4,5%, against +4,1% in December, which had been the minimum of the last 15 months. Analysts had forecast a +4,1% for the consumer price index and +0,8% for that of the PPI, which instead recorded +0,7% in January, against +1,7% of the month of December.

The price increase is related to the traditional consumption boom recorded during the Chinese Lunar New Year. The data, released today by the National Statistics Office, interrupts a five-month series of slowdown in price pressures. There has been no significant reaction from the markets.
