Christie's: Marina Abramovic and other artists donate their work to “Blu Marine” for the protection of the oceans

Blue Marine, a charity dedicated to protecting the ocean and combating overfishing, one of the world's biggest environmental problems, partners with Christie's on Blue.

More than 20 world-leading artistsand are donating works to be auctioned as part of Christie's 20th/21st Century Art auctions for the benefit of Blue Marine i projectsn the whole world. Blue Marine's mission is to combat overfishing, in order to help ocean life perform its vital function of stabilizing Earth's climate. Our oceans are in danger, and the triple threat of biodiversity loss, habitat destruction and climate change puts at risk the health of the oceans, on which all life on earth depends. With 8% of the world's oceans protected, Blue Marine is committed to supporting the goal of the United Nations global framework “30×30”: protect 30% of the world's oceans by 2030.

Performance by Marina Abramović

One of the highlights of the Blue: Art for the Oceans initiative is a photograph (the first of an edition of three, plus two artist proofs) taken during a unique performance of Marina Abramović in May 2024. Filmed on Fire Island in New York, Performance for the Oceans (2024) is the result of a collaboration between the Serbian conceptual and performance artist and Blue Marine. The work depicts Abramović giving his unconditional love and energy to our oceans, highlighting the urgent need for their preservation.

Other internationally renowned artists involved: Yoshitomo Nara, Edmund de Waal, Lydia Blakeley and Jonas Burgert and others.

Blue: Art for the Ocean highlights Christie's ongoing efforts to leverage its influence in the art market to promote sustainability and drive positive change. Recognizing the urgent need for climate action, Christie's has set ambitious goals to become a more sustainable business, becoming the first major auction house to do so, and this initiative further underlines this commitment.
