Christie's, great success of New York auctions for photography collectors

Peter Beard with the marvelous Orphan Cheetah Triptich collects 662.000 euros in Christie's auctions for photography collectors in New York Rockefeller Plaza which closed yesterday – Avedon also shines and a signed and numbered portrait of Brigitte Bardot from 1959 is sold for 204 thousand euros – The Photographs auction collects 4 million and 800 thousand euros.

The first auction was entirely dedicated to works by Richard Avedon, great American photographer of Russian origin, who worked mainly in the fashion world, but also an incredible portraitist. The auction catalog presented only 28 photographs (all signed and numbered), but all images-icons of the artist and particularly known to the public. The auction ended with a total allotment of 1.170.000€.

Top Lots:

 The charming woman among the elephants Dovima with elephants, Evening dress by Dior, Cirque d'Hiver, Paris, August 1955 (estimate €150.000-€230.000) awarded to 204.000 €;

the portrait of Brigitte Bardot from 1959 (estimate 76.000-115.000€) signed and numbered 12/35 – awarded to 204.000 €;

the model Stephanie Seymonur, New York (estimate 153.000-230.000€) awarded to 177.000 €;

it's still, The family (€ 115.000-192.000) awarded to 158.000€.

Here are the equally famous images: Nastassja Kinski and the serpent, (€48.000); The portrait of Marella Agnelli (€38.000); Andy Warhol and members of the Factory (€38.000); the portrait of Lauren Hutton – Great Exuma -the Bahamas of October 1968 (€38.000); Veruschka-Dress by Kimberly (€18.000); Suzy Parker and Robin Tattersall (15.000e); Elise Daniels with stree performens (€14.500); Gloria Swanson and Jose Ferrer (€13.500); Penelope tree-Mask by Ungaro-Paris (€13.500); Renée-The New Look of Dior – Place de la Concorde – Paris from 1947, (€12.500) signed and numbered 4/75;

Once the “Avedon” auction ended, the second auction followed immediately “PHOTOGRAPHS, an eagerly awaited event by international collectors, with 447 lots put up for auction in two sessions. Total awards: €4.800.000.

In the catalog among the authors, works by: Peter Beard, Andre Kertesz, Irving Penn, Robert Mapplethorpe, Pierre Dubreuil, Carlton Watkins, Diane Arbus, William Eggleston and many others. Plus a special collection of photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson.
