Christie's to auction a 101,73-carat diamond in Geneva

The spring auctions dedicated to jewels and precious stones are starting, a trend that fascinates more and more collectors and especially investors from all over the world. A sector that tends to grow, also due to the importance of considering these objects as a "safe haven". Christie's Geneva, at the auction of 15st May next, he will be auctioning off a true “natural” masterpiece, a true “work of art of nature”, a diamond of 101,73 carats.

In addition to being the first time ever to be offered for sale, this sensational gem is not only one of the largest diamonds known to date, pear-shaped, but it is also one of the most perfect in the world: a D color, type jewel IIA Flawless.

The diamond was graded by the Gemological Institute of America with the best color, D, and the best clarity, Flawless. Its absolute symmetry is a true tour-de-force, demonstrating the necessary and exceptional skills to achieve such a perfect jewel. It also enjoys a rare brilliance and clarity, chemically found only in type II bis diamonds, which represent less than 2% of world diamond production.

The 236-carat rough diamond was found at the Jwaneng MINE in Botswana.

Of the total annual worldwide diamond production of more than 100 million carats, the Gemological Institute of America estimates that there are no more than 600 diamond crystals that end up as one to two carat polished stones, and that they are D color, flawless clarity. A 101,73-carat gem is not only an exceptional rarity, but a major event in the world of gems and jewelry.

Rahul Kadakia, Head of Jewelry, Christie Switzerland & America says: “Just as a great artist is able to see a masterpiece in a block of marble, a perfect diamond is the result of the expertise of a master cutter who is able to discover the beauty of a rough jewel”.

The best diamonds in the world:

The world's most famous pear-shaped diamond is the Cullinan I, a colorless, Type IIa stone of 530,20 carats, which is part of the British Crown Jewels. This is also the largest colorless diamond known to date.
