Chemistry, Siad invests 15 million in research

The chemical group Siad invests 15 million euros for a new research laboratory for food and medical gases in the Osio Sopra plant. The infrastructure, which will be completed in 2020 and which will have an area of 2600 m2, will allow automated and robotic production of innovative gas mixtures.

The project is the result of the innovation agreement between the Ministry of Economic Development, the Lombardy Region and Siad Spa, aimed at supporting the investment program through the project called "Gas products for innovative therapeutic, diagnostic, food and metrological applications and related automated systems of production, use and administration".

The Siad plant in Osio Sopra has existed since 1946 and since the end of the 50s the company has put argon gas on the market, an analyzer for the nitrogen content in cryogenically produced argon, high purity hydrogen for the electronics industry and later carbon monoxide produced by a proprietary process, high purity chlorine, the production of gases used in the electronics industry such as diborane and phosphine, and nitrous oxide.

For the development of new medicinal mixtures, Siad will field collaborations with research institutions with the aim of studying and introducing gases with particular therapeutic characteristics into the medical field. Some gases are already used for their therapeutic effect, such as nitrous oxide, xenon and nitrous oxide, but many others can be exploited in the medical field. Research will also be developed to design and produce mixtures that allow rapid medical diagnosis using non-invasive techniques.
