Nuclear power plants: doors open in April

The third edition of "Open Gate", the project by Sogin  is opens the doors to Italian nuclear power plants. About 3.000 people will be able to visit them, who will thus be able to learn about and verify the methods adopted by the public company in charge of dismantling what remains of the nuclear power plants rejected by the 1987 referendum and closed since then. The event will take place on the weekend of 13 14 and April. Registrations are underway on theirs place and will close on Sunday 31 March.

The initiative will involve the four best-known Italian plants:

  • Trino (Vercelli): which achieved the world record for operation at full power during operation
  • Caorso (Piacenza): the largest Italian power plant
  • Latina: at the time of its launch it was the most powerful in Europe
  • Garigliano (Caserta): with the characteristic "white sphere" that encloses the reactor

At the sites of Trino, Caorso and Garigliano there are two visit itineraries ("controlled area" and "industrial area"), while in Latina there is a single itinerary ("industrial area"). Of these 2.896 visitors (this is the maximum capacity allowed), 920 will be welcomed in Trino, 800 in Caorso, 756 in Latina and 420 in Garigliano.

The tour will last about two hours and Sogin technicians will have the task of narrating a piece of industrial history of our country. They will also talk about the work they do every day, from decommissioning facilities to managing radioactive waste.

The novelties of this third edition are the Instagram profile opengate_sogin and the hashtag #opengate2019. Through images, videos and stories they will demonstrate the spirit of Open Gate both with the eyes of Sogin citizens and employees.
