Cdp-Saipem: memorandum of understanding on energy transition

The Italian and international energy transition at the center of memorandum of understanding signed by CDP and Saipem. The agreement provides for the two giants to evaluate together the launch of innovative projects with high environmental, social and economic sustainability and initiatives aimed at decarbonisation, the circular economy and energy efficiency.

The joint projects that CDP and Saipem will carry out will concern 3 macro areas: infrastructures for production of energy from renewable sources, projects by The circular economy with a focus on investment methods with the help of specific technologies (such as technologies that valorise urban and industrial solid waste, plastic disposal). Lastly, the two companies will study the methods of applying intervention models for the promotion, development and implementation of supply infrastructure, the transformation and use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in maritime transport.

As far as roles are concerned, CDP "will contribute its economic-financial skills, the management of institutional relations both at an international, national and local level, and the management of relations with the Italian and international development cooperation system, for access to forms of technical assistance and financial support”, reads the note from the company led by Fabrizio Palermo.

Saipem, for its part, will make use of its experience in the engineering and construction of large infrastructures, will contribute industrial, technical and commercial resources and skills specific to the implementation of complex projects in the photovoltaic and offshore wind fields, the circular economy and LNG infrastructure. The oil company will also contribute by making available its expertise on specific technological and digital solutions.

"The Protocol signed by CDP and Saipem - explain the two giants - is aimed at supporting the achievement of the national objectives identified by the Italian National Energy and Climate Plan, which require the installation of new capacity from renewable energy sources up to around 42 GW (of which around 32 GW from photovoltaic plants by 2030), the achievement of the community objectives identified by the EU Circular Economy 2018 Package which establishes the recycling percentages of urban waste to be achieved gradually over the next few years (55% in 2025, 60% in 2030 and 65% in 2035) and a reduction to the maximum limit of 10% of the quantity of urban waste that can be disposed of in landfills by 2035 and the achievement of the Development Goals Sustainable Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030”.

Fabrizio Palermo, CEO of Cdp, said: “With this agreement, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti confirms its commitment to system initiatives for the country's sustainable growth. The collaboration between CDP and Saipem is absolutely strategic for the development of innovative projects linked to the energy transition and the circular economy: thanks to the cooperation that has already been consolidated for some time and which is now further strengthened, we are able to generate a positive impact on the local environmental and socio-economic level”.

Stephen Cao, CEO of Saipem, said: "With the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding, which aims to accelerate the energy transition in Italy, CDP and Saipem will collaborate to launch highly sustainable innovative projects in the sectors of electricity generation from renewable sources and of the circular economy. Saipem, in addition to being involved in the role of infrastructure developer, will actively intervene, right from the preliminary stages, in the development of new initiatives with the decisive support of CDP".
