Cdp, Fincantieri, Fs, Snam and Terna: agreement for Genoa

The five companies have signed an agreement with the local institutions aimed at supporting the economic recovery of the Ligurian capital - Here are the initiatives put in place

Cdp, Fincantieri, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Snam and Terna join forces to support the city of Genoa and its metropolitan area, hard hit by the collapse of the Morandi bridge.

The five companies have signed an agreement with the local institutions aimed at supporting the economic recovery of the Ligurian capital through a series of diversified measures aimed at public bodies, the infrastructure system, businesses, families and the solution to the housing emergency.

In detail, the Memorandum of Understanding provides: 

  • Financial support to public bodies: CDP has offered its willingness to intervene in favor of local authorities in the affected area, starting with the already occurred suspension of payment of loan installments due in 2018 and 2019. In this way it will be possible to free up resources to be used to address the emergency and to relaunch the economic fabric of the area.
  • Infrastructure support: CDP, Fincantieri, the FS Italiane Group, Snam and Terna, also through their subsidiaries, will provide support to the affected areas by making their know-how and technical and design skills available. Planned initiatives to strengthen the port areas and the local transport system, favoring intermodality, crucial elements for the relaunch of the economy of the entire Ligurian area. 

As for the role of individual companies:

  • CDP, in addition to the role of potential lender, will be able to provide support to the Public Administration for the implementation of initiatives to be carried out with recourse to public-private partnerships;
  • Fincantieri will supply the project for the construction of a steel bridge over the Polcevera for the alternative road system and will also supply the project for the infrastructural upgrading of the Sestri Ponente construction site;
  • Italian FS Group it will be able to contribute to the strengthening of public transport services, both by rail and by road, according to the logic of sustainability and intermodality, as well as the construction or expansion of interchange infrastructures near the railway stations and road and railway accessibility to port areas;
  • Snam will be able to build infrastructure for sustainable mobility, with the development of biomethane plants and compressed and liquefied natural gas (CNG/LNG) refueling stations serving local and private public transport and road haulage, and initiatives aimed at reducing emissions pollutants in the port area of ​​Genoa and the energy upgrading of city buildings, as well as the consolidation of gas transport infrastructures in the Region. Training courses on energy transition issues will be activated;
  • Terna will be able to implement the plan of interventions to improve the quality of service of the electricity transmission grid of the metropolitan area of ​​Genoa and the entire region and start collaborations with the University of Genoa to promote studies or research in the energy and environmental fields.

There are also solutions for the housing emergency. The agreement provides that CDP, CDP Immobiliare and CDP Investimenti Sgr will make available to families a property they own, called the "Palazzina ex Casa delle Infermiere" capable of accommodating over 100 people. An urban regeneration project is also being implemented, which includes further real estate redevelopment and social housing interventions. 

Finally, to support businesses and families  CDP, in collaboration with the commissioners, the Region and FILSE, will propose the launch of actions to support households and businesses, implementing new measures and resorting to the use of public funds, as well as its own resources in order to activate financing to contribute to the restoration of private assets and of the affected economic and productive activities and to support the relaunch of the competitiveness of the regional production system.
