Catania, Open Fiber brings optical fiber throughout the city

The entire city of Catania was wired by Open Fiber with an ultra-broadband fiber optic infrastructure, through a private investment of around 30 million euros. The CEO of the company, Elisabetta Ripa, announced it today in the presence of the mayor, Enzo Bianco.

Based on the data provided today, in Catania the Open Fiber network has reached 120 real estate units in FTTH (Fiber To The Home) mode, directly inside the buildings. Furthermore, thanks to the agreement signed with Vodafone and Wind Tre, the marketing of the service is already active with various offers from the various operators. “Open Fiber – explains the company in a note – is in fact an operator wholesale only, which makes access to its infrastructure available to all interested operators, under non-discriminatory technical and economic conditions”.

Catania is the second city to be completed among the top 10 of the Open Fiber plan for market areas, which includes 271 Italian cities, and the first in the Mezzogiorno. Open Fiber is thinking of extending the cabling perimeter to the Catania hinterland as well.

"We were the first in the South" said the Mayor of Catania Enzo Bianco “and the second in Italy to have completed the fiber optic cabling work. This will allow our city to make an extraordinary leap forward in innovation, with positive effects on the economic and social development of our territory”.

“We are proud to announce the achievement of the City's cabling goals Catania well in advance of the time schedule, also thanks to the fruitful collaboration with the Municipality" declared the CEO of Open Fiber Elisabetta Ripa "Now Open Fiber's commitment continues throughout the Region, in cities and small towns, so that all Sicilians can take advantage of a future-proof network with ultra-fast connectivity and increasingly cutting-edge services".

In Sicily, Open Fiber will also bring ultra-broadband connectivity to the so-called "market failure" areas, the less populated areas of the country that pay the highest price in terms of digital divide. In recent days, the company has started construction sites in Trecastagni (Catania) and in four municipalities in the province of Messina: Gallodoro, Oliveri, Terme Vigliatore and Torrenova. Gradually, all 390 Municipalities of the largest Region in Italy will be wired.
