Catalonia, Puigdemont renounces but invents a "shadow government"

Puigdemont has renounced his position as President and indicated Jordi Sànchez for the leadership of the Generalitat – Too bad the latter is in prison – In the meantime, the separatists would have reached an agreement establishing the creation of a Council of the Republic in Brussels which will support the Official executive.

Catalonia, Puigdemont renounces but invents a "shadow government"

The Catalan political crisis continues to the bitter end in a game of paradoxes that has reached unimaginable heights.

After months of persistence, former president Carles Puigdemont has decided to take a step back, renouncing his re-election as head of the Generalitat. The number one of the Barcelona parliament, Roger Torrent, based on the outcome of the elections of December 21 (won by the separatists) had indicated him and only him at the head of the Spanish autonomous community, confirming Puigdemont's "legitimacy" until a few hours ago and denouncing the "authoritarian drift" of the state. It is a pity that the former Governor has been in self-exile in Brussels for months and cannot return to his homeland without being immediately arrested for rebellion, sedition and embezzlement due to the unilateral declaration of independence approved by the Catalan parliament and endorsed by the former regional government. “Details” that make impossible to appoint him as president, given that Iberian law does not provide for the possibility of remote elections.

Over the past month, the ousted President has been trying hard to find a loophole. Useless attempts which yesterday evening, 28 February, led him to give up and give up his office, at least temporarily.

In a video released on the Web, however, Puigdemont did not limit himself to taking a step back, but also indicated the name of the person, in his opinion, expected to become the new president of Catalonia: Jordi Sànchez.

Even behind this second option, however, they hide "details" that could come between the separatists and the leadership of the Generalitat. The former president of the Catalan National Assembly is currently located imprisoned for the same crimes hanging over Puigdemont's head and therefore unable to attend or participate in the sessions of the Catalan parliament despite having been elected deputy in the last elections. In fact therefore, not even Sanchez could have what it takes to govern given that, unless the judges decide to release him or grant him permits (until now always denied) he will not be able to go to Parliament to be elected, exactly like the leader "in exile". At this point, to overcome the stasis,  the government could pass into the hands of Jordi Turull, spokesman and minister of the presidency of the former regional executive.

But that's not all. In fact, according to the rumors published by the Spanish press, Catalonia may soon find itself with “two different governments”. The separatists would in fact have reached an agreement establishing the creation of a Council of the Republic in Brussels who will support the official Executive which sooner or later will have to be born in Barcelona. A sort of shadow government that will lead the region from abroad, obviously led by Puigdemont, and that will be elected by an Assembly of the Republic made up of deputies and mayors convened in the next few days in Belgium.

The Spanish Prime Minister commented on the matter, Mariano Rajoy, who summed up the plan of the Catalan secessionists with a single word: "insane".
