Catalonia, Puigdemont free on bail

The former president of the Generalitat and the former ministers of the Catalan government Comín, Ponsatí, Puig and Serret presented themselves at a police station in Brussels. After the European arrest warrant was served, they were released on conditional release. Within 24 hours the investigating judge will decide whether to confirm the state of detention.

The Brussels public prosecutor served the European arrest warrant issued by Madrid on the former president of the Generalitat of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont and his former regional government ministers Antoni Comín (Health), Clara Ponsati (Education), Lluís Puig (Culture) and Meritxell Serret (Agriculture), repaired in Belgium since last October 30th.

A spokesman for the Public Prosecutor's Office explained that Puigdemont and his four former ministers turned themselves in to the federal police in the morning at the police station at 202 Rue Royal in Brussels, accompanied by their lawyers. Not in the prosecutor's office, where they were also awaited by a crowd of journalists. After notification, Puigdemont and his four former ministers were released on bail. In the afternoon, the investigating judge will listen to them individually, then decide whether to confirm their arrest within 24 hours. The spokesman for the Brussels prosecutor's office said that the deadline for the judge's decision is set for 9,17 tomorrow, but it is possible that it will be communicated between 20 and 22 this evening.
