Cassa depositi e prestiti, sector studies: report on broadband and new generation networks
The Report has been published “Broadband and New Generation Networks”, created by the Research and Study Service of Cassa depositi e prestiti, which represents the second issue in the editorial series that the Cassa has decided to dedicate to infrastructures and industrial sectors of strategic importance, after the successful revitalization of the Research and Education.

A systematic review analyzes the broadband sector in Italy and in Europe with reference to both market development, both to the legislative and regulatory framework, identifying growth opportunities deriving from the creation of an infrastructure with a strong strategic value for the country.

The Report – which constitutes a useful analysis tool – highlights among other things i delays that Italy suffers in the diffusion of the New Generation Networks, underlining the potential offered by a wider use of digital technologies in terms of benefits for citizens, businesses and public administrations.

The document is divided into six chapters:

– Chapter 1 provides an overview of the new generation network segment in Italy, highlighting its potential for the national economy, the need in terms of investments and possible evolutions, in relation to the different infrastructure development models;

– Chapter 2 and Chapter 4 explore the legislative and regulatory framework in Europe and in Italy with reference to the provisions contained in the Digital Agenda, the rules for access to network infrastructures and the resources made available both within the Community and national;

– Chapter 3 and Chapter 5 describe the diffusion of broadband and ultra-broadband technologies in Europe and in Italy, identifying their main characteristics both on the supply side (availability of connections and services) and on the demand side ( IT literacy level of households and businesses;

– finally, Chapter 6 analyzes the competitive positioning of the main TLC operators in Italy and the main initiatives for the creation of new generation networks.

The analysis is completed by an Appendix which contains an in-depth analysis of the main technologies for the creation of New Generation Networks.
