Timoshenko case, 7-year sentence confirmed for abuse of power

Sentence confirmed for Iulia Timoshenko, former Ukrainian prime minister. He will remain in prison for another six years (the first sentence will be on 11 October).

The Ukrainian Court of Cassation upheld the sentence in the third instance of justice for the controversial gas supply contract signed with Moscow in 2009, when Timoshenko was Ukraine's prime minister. The charge is that of abuse of power.

The leader of the Ukrainian opposition will still be able to appeal to the Court of Strasbourg: just yesterday (Tuesday 28 August) the European Court of Human Rights met to judge the legitimacy of Timoshenko's arrest, which took place on 5 August 2011.
