Capacity Market: Enel is awarded 12,9 Gw in the auction for 2024

Enel has been awarded contracts for 12,9 GW out of a total value of approximately 41,5 GW with delivery in 2024 assigned by Terna as part of thecapacity market auction, which awards annual contracts for existing capacity and 15-year contracts for new capacity in relation to the capacity available for the electricity system. These are auctions introduced three years ago on the basis of the provisions of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan. Their aim is to allow the achievement of the Italian energy transition objectives, allowing the closure of coal-fired plants by 2025. 

Returning to today's news, the company led by Francesco Starace was awarded: 

  • 10,4 GW of existing capacity, 
  • 1 GW of foreign capacity,
  • 1,5 GW of new capacity. 

“The latter – explains Enel in a note – will be satisfied for over two thirds by battery storage systems and for the remainder from renewable plants as well as from the upgrading and renovation of some gas plants already in service".

In detail, the company emphasizes i 0,5 GW of new capacity awarded in Sardinia, which it will honor by building accumulation systems and without having to invest in new gas plants.

In Piazza Affari, after the news was released, the Enel share gains almost 1%, rising to 6,405 euros per share.
