Airport chaos between canceled flights, strikes and increasingly expensive tickets: 2022 holidays at risk

Il airport chaos during 2022 summer it continues unabated and August promises to be almost as hot for those who have to leave as the scorching climate. Over 15.700 flights canceled by companies in European skies in the key month of the summer holidays (about 2% of those expected), sales of short-haul tickets and strikes announced by some companies. To the problem of canceled flights is added that of price increases of the ticket prices, and of no small importance if one looks at the consumer portfolio eroded by unstoppable inflation and the rises in energy and raw materials.

The situation has partially improved compared to June and July, when the unexpected recovery in demand had displaced most carriers and airports, which were left short-staffed after two years of the pandemic. But the chaos does not only concern air carriers, but also airport structures, with ai problems check-in, ramps, security, parking and ai bagagli more and more lost.

High problem. In case of cancellations o flight delays, the logistical and economic burden falls primarily on the agencies and tour operators, required by European directive to guarantee assistance and alternative solutions to customers without a flight.

Holidays 2022: the airport chaos has upset the plans of some

All this has discouraged "undecided" travellers. A part of the vacationers who hadn't booked yet, preferred to change their destination or postpone their departure to September. In other cases, those who intended to travel abroad preferred to stay in Italy or in any case choose a destination that could be reached by alternative means to the plane. The risk is to jeopardize the recovery of the tourism sector after the excellent start in recent months.

August 2022 air strikes: dates and flights at risk

I continue airline strikes put at risk the trips of tourists and workers who have to go to Spain, Kingdom Unito e Germany.

Traveling to or from the Iberian country will be very complicated in August 2022. This is because the Uso and Sitcpla unions have already announced the next air strikes that will involve the airports of Alicante, Barcelona, Girona, Ibiza, Malaga, Madrid, Palma de Majorca, Santiago de Compostela and Seville.

In particular, the new block of strikes will concern the period from 8 August 2022 to 9 January 2023 and will involve, in particular, the crews of Ryanair and the pilots of EasyJet: tired of the very long negotiations for the renewal of the collective agreement they will not fly from 12 to 14, from 19 to 21, and from 27 to 29 August.

Thousands of flights were also canceled in Germany with the ground crew of Lufthansa arms crossed for a long time. If the situation is not resolved, many other flights will be cancelled. Employees are asking for pay raises on their contract. Disruption also expected in the UK, with sales of short-haul tickets suspended for a week aside British Airways. Even in this circumstance the British Airways pilots consider their salaries excessively low.

The tourist season has started very well, even if late. But there are winter clouds on the horizon, some concern mainly because of fuel surcharges e of inflation.
