A decree signed today by the MISE and the MEF establishes the raising of the income thresholds valid for accessing the exemption from paying the RAI license fee – Here are the new rules announced by Premier Paolo Gentiloni.

“It has just been signed by the Minister of Economy and the Minister of Economic Development the decree for the increase in the Rai license fee exemption income bracket for those over 75".

The announcement came this morning directly from the Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni during the press conference of the State Property Agency on the 2017 results.

The raising of the income threshold valid for the exemption from paying the Rai license fee is an important novelty that will affect hundreds of thousands of taxpayers. In detail, 350 households will no longer be required to pay the tax. Today there are a total of 115 thousand.

RAI FEE EXEMPTION: HOW IT WORKS TODAY

To date, citizens who have reached the age of 75 may be exempt from the Rai license fee on one condition: to have an annual income equal to or not exceeding 6.713,18 euros. In order not to pay, it is necessary to “contact the Agency's offices to present una substitutive declaration of request for exemption".

The application for exemption must be submitted by April 30 of each year.

RAI FEE EXEMPTION: THE NEW THRESHOLDS

The decree signed today by Pier Carlo Padoan, minister of the Economy, and by Carlo Calenda, number one of the Mise, establishes the raising of the income threshold that allows the over 75s to access the exemption from paying the Rai license fee. In detail, they will no longer have to pay even one euro, upon presentation of the appropriate substitute declaration, citizens who have reached the age of 75 with an income not exceeding 8.000 euros. 

The new threshold will affect 232.571 households in addition to the 115.500 who already did not pay the rent.

Satisfied Rai. According to a note, the company "takes positive note of the Government provision which extends the exemption from the payment of the license fee to those over 75 with an income of less than 8 euros a year".

"The provision, aimed at promoting social inclusion – continues the press release – is in line with similar measures already in place for the main European public broadcasters and is in complete harmony with the principles of substantial equality and free access to information sanctioned by the Constitution and specific to Rai's mission. Support for the weakest segments of the population represents an essential value for the radio and television public service”.
