Candidacy yes, candidacy no, Monti and the Northern League: Berlusconi's tragic minuet

Il Cavaliere is looking for a way out in order not to run for prime minister because he fears a resounding defeat - And so, after having scuttled the government, he proposes to Monti to lead a group of moderates with the League inside and of which he himself would be guarantor and director - Then he threatens to bring down the councils of Veneto and Piedmont - Risk of exclusion from the EPP?

Candidacy yes, candidacy no, Monti and the Northern League: Berlusconi's tragic minuet

After an hour and a half of hesitations and circumventions ("My possible candidacy" "Monti could reunite the moderates" "Angelino Alfano is still in first position for the premiership"), which accompanied his participation in the presentation of yet another book by Bruno Vespa, Berlusconi finally took over the state of the art from Massimo Franco on the threshold of a secondary exit. “I'm looking for – he told the columnist of the“ Corriere della sera ”who reported it in his article – a good reason not to run. Also because in this way I could fold without being beaten, without running the risk of leaving the scene after a burning defeat ".

And yet, judging by the tragic minuet (one step forward, two to the side, three backwards, then, one forward again), one gets the impression that this path, in order not to stand as a candidate without leaving the scene, the Cavalier still hasn't have found. And so in an environment that was anything but hostile, reassured by the presence of numerous super fans and naturally by the affectionate presence of Vespa, Berlusconi showed that he was willing to do anything, but also undecided about everything. He began by saying that he would withdraw from his candidacy for Palazzo Chigi, if it were Monti himself who did so in the name of a group of moderates, of which the League of Maroni should belong above all and of which, above all, it should be the Cavaliere himself who does as director and guarantor. It then becomes natural to wonder why Berlusconi brought down the Monti government early, and why, even yesterday, in what the "Foglio" reporter called "a communicative disaster", he continued to speak of a disastrous government action dominated by Germany by the current Executive.

Then, when it was pointed out to him that the League itself had said it was available to an alliance with the PDL only on condition that he was not the premier candidate, Berlusconi was unable to do better than threaten to bring down the Veneto juntas and Piedmont led by the Carroccio if the League had gone alone to Lombardy. But how? First he asks that Monti head a group of moderates of which the Northern League is a part. Then he moves on to threats against his sponsors. But? They will be problems among moderates. The fact is that Maroni and Tosi have replied in unison that Berlusconi's threats are "jokes".

Meanwhile, it is no longer known whether the PDL (of which Berlusconi yesterday said he did not like just the acronym) still exists. La Russa and Gasparri and other former AN are about to field the "national centre-right". of course it is an “unpacking”. Which means consensual split, but there is always a split. Others (Sacconi, Quagliariello, Cicchitto i ciellini and others) are looking at the possible Monti lists, regardless of the presence of the League and Berlusconi's direction .. With whom, in the end, the faithful Alfano would remain. For which Berlusconi once again has words of praise: "For the premiership he is still in first position", he said, suggesting that even if Monti responds negatively to his invitations, he could once again fall back on the secretary of the PDL.

Picture more than confused, as you can see. Yet Berlusconi is also weighed down by the excommunication of Europe, of the EPP which for days has also been considering the expulsion hypothesis. Berlusconi also said yesterday that he will be in Brussels today. But many of his accredited advisors advise him to postpone, fearing a cold reception from major European leaders. A scene that has already been seen on other occasions in Europe.
