Canada: Trudeau still prime minister, but without a majority

The outgoing liberal prime minister won the early elections he called but without reaching 170 seats in Parliament. He will still have to ally himself with the NPD of rising star Jagmeet Singh, 42, of Indian origin

Canada: Trudeau still prime minister, but without a majority

Nothing done in Canada, or almost. To the outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who led a minority government and had called early elections precisely to obtain an absolute majority in Parliament, Barack Obama's endorsement and good management of the pandemic were not enough (almost 70% of the population is completely immunised): the liberal he won the elections, but has not returned to the popularity levels of 2015. He will therefore be prime minister again, but this time too with a minority government: the results of the elections are not yet definitive, but it seems that the Liberals will win exactly the same seats they have today, i.e. 155, while the threshold for an absolute majority is 170. Some projections put Trudeau's party at 158 seats, but little changes.

What is certain, however, is that Trudeau won, while O'Toole's Conservatives have not made it through, who seemed to be making a big comeback by winking at the No Vaxes, at gun owners and promising not to raise taxes (while the rival wants to introduce an extra tax for banks and insurance companies, to finance the mortgages of young people under 40): the in the projections it stops at 119 seats, exactly the ones it has today, even if in percentage terms at national level it beat the Liberals, with 33,86% of the votes against 32,32%. On the other hand, Bloc Quebecois, the French-speaking independence party, gained 2 seats, rising to 34 seats in Parliament, confirming itself as the third force ahead of the New Democratic Party, led by the Sikh of Indian origin Jagmeet Singh, which rose to 25 seats obtaining almost 18%. . NPD is allied with Trudeau but oriented more to the left and loved by young people.

It was also for this reason that the liberal premier had called the early vote: to consolidate his leadership and possibly do without his popular ally, 42 years old and in full political ascent (he is supported by the American pasionaria Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez). Singh proposes drastic measures especially for the environment and in favor of young people and the poorest groups: orientations on which even Trudeau agrees, who, however, hoped for the success of the vaccination campaign to obtain from the citizens the possibility of holding the helm alone. Instead for the 49-year-old, who has also been considered a sex symbol over the years, it will once again be a minority government. However, according to the Canadian press, Trudeau emerges somewhat strengthened: the right-wing ambush has failed and the prerequisites for an executive that will solidly reach the end of the term are all there.
