CHAMPIONS AT SUNSET – Totti leaves Rome? It is the last case of the bitter farewell of the champion-flag

After the Maldini cases (contested by AC Milan fans in the last match) and Del Piero (in fact already fired by Agnelli) a missed penalty against Juventus was enough to call into question the last of the "untouchables": Francesco Totti, who he admitted that he thought about leaving after the criticisms received. Another love story that threatens to end badly

Perhaps this also happens when you go too far. It also happens that great champions and flags universally recognized by fans and opponents leave each other "badly" with their historic teams. Like two engaged couples who, after loving each other so intensely, don't want to resign themselves to the idea that their relationship is over. And by pulling too much on the rope, in fact, they break it.

If it happened three years ago on the occasion of the farewell to football Paolo Maldini, 25 years of loyalty to Milan and a list of trophies won that it is even superfluous to remember, only to be challenged by the Curva Sud of the Rossoneri fans in the last lap of the pitch, let alone what they are experiencing now Alessandro Del Piero at Juventus and Francesco Totti at Roma.

They too are almost generational flags of their teams (both made their debut in '94 and have never changed their shirts) and mythological figures for the fans, are heading towards sunset. The identity card begins to weigh but the desire to play remains. So far, there would be no problems. However, we have to deal with the "girlfriends", who are not the fans, always faithful and romantically linked to the myth, but the clubs, which have to meet the costs of hiring and the necessary rejuvenation of the team.

In the case of Maldini this problem did not arise, on the contrary it was old grudges with a group of fans that broke the spell and made a bitter farewell that deserved much more tribute.

In the case of Del Piero instead the situation is exactly this: still well liked by the fans, but in fact torpedoed by the president Andrea Agnelli who inelegantly put the dots on the "i" at the beginning of the season: "Great Alex, thanks for everything, but maybe it's better that this be your last season”.

The last case however, that of Totti, so far had none of these problems. Still acclaimed and indeed even "demanded" on the pitch by the fans, who every time they don't see Pupone's name in the starting lineup immediately ask for Luis Enrique's head, and still, to this day, satisfied in all respects by a club perhaps too much influenced by an environment, the Roman and Giallorossi, decidedly pressing and unwilling to compromise.

“Roma is Totti”, the people of the South decreed. at least a couple of years seems objectively less and less useful to the cause.

In addition, Totti was also satisfied with the figure, which has seen only a minimal adjustment and still weighs on the club (in known financial difficulty) for a gross amount of almost 9 million a year. Not bad, for a contract between 34 and 38 years old. Gratitude for almost 20 years of As Roma is also this.

Ma now even this cord (an umbilical cord, mostly) is snapping. One was enough missed penalty against Juve. Just him, the infallible hero of the spoon, and just against the most hated enemies, those black and white goals from Turone and Calciopoli. It would seem that the fans, for the first time, are starting to murmur, and Totti to accuse a hint of malaise sensing this lack of confidence. Everyone is quick to deny it, like in a marriage when there are lovers involved or things that no one has to know. But the love story, too, is now over. And we can swear that lovers will part badly: "I'll always love you, but we can't be together anymore."
