Calenda: "Action and +Europe together in the next elections"

The founder of Azione announced the creation of a "liberal democratic and reformist" list, which would already be worth between 5,5 and 7%: "We will prevent the formation of an anti-European government".

Calenda: "Action and +Europe together in the next elections"

The announcement was made directly by Carlo Calenda on his social channels: in the next general elections, which could also be imminent in the (unlikely) case in which the government crisis should lead to the polls in a few months, Action and Più Europa will run together. in a list that the former minister of economic development and candidate for mayor of Rome defined as “liberal democrat and reformist”. This list, which will also be made up of movements and personalities from civil society, according to the founder of Azione "is already between 5,5% and 7%. And it will grow. And it will be decisive for the constitution of every government”.

Thus a new center formation is born, which especially in the event of a return to the proportional system, as hypothesized by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte himself on the occasion of his speech in the Chamber to ask for confidence, will be able to have a certain weight within Parliament. Azione and Più Europa are going to occupy a substantially free political space, and Calenda himself, again through his social media profiles, has launched an appeal to join other political forces as well: “This initiative – wrote the leader of Azione – is the only barrier that it will be able to prevent the formation of an anti-European government and bring about the birth of a reformist one. It would take more courage from those in the Democratic Party or Forza Italia who do not share submission to the populists. Time to move."

However, Calenda's tweet lacks a reference to Italia Viva, the party of former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, which also, in the light of its political positions and also of journalistic rumors that have been circulating for months, would also have the profile suitable for fleshing out the patrol of moderates who could thus join forces, to overcome a hypothetical barrier threshold which from alone it would be difficult to achieve. And then in the background there is always the race for mayor of Rome, with the elections that will probably be moved to autumn due to Covid, but that of Calenda - which also winks at some of the Democrats - it could also be read as a signal of a breakout towards the leaders of the party, with the risk therefore of not receiving support. Support that Calenda himself has instead guaranteed to Beppe Sala, who is running again for mayor of Milan for a second term.

"More Europe and Action - added a joint note from the two parties, confirming, with respect to the Government crisis, the wish for a so-called "Ursula majority" - are in no way available to support governments that are born under the sign of transformism and who have already shown that they are not up to par in the management of the Covid emergency, in the implementation of economic policies and in the design of the Italian Next Generation Eu. We believe that the only sensible way out of the current situation is the construction of a government representative of the parties that in Europe support the Von der Leyen Commission and led by an authoritative and capable personality and formed by a ministerial team with proven political and administrative experience" .

If this solution is not possible Action and More Europe will remain in opposition, “in each case strengthening their political coordination and participation in common initiatives. We will continue to work together to build a liberal democratic list in view of the next political elections, including political movements, associations and personalities who have shared our values and proposals".
