Hydrogen boilers, Sit and Bosch collaborate for gas control

SIT, a company that develops smart solutions and technologies for heating and for measuring gas consumptioncontinues its commitment to supporting the introduction of new technologies that ensure energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. In fact, the Veneto-based company was selected by Bosch Termotechnik as a technological partner for the development of a safety and control valve for hydrogen boilers as part of the British government program Hy4Heat. The Hy4Heat program is part of the UK's national plan “decarbonisation of heating”, which aims to evaluate the use of hydrogen appliances to reduce CO2 emissions through the use of decarbonised gas.

Hydrogen, compared to natural gas, presents major technological challenges as it is a lighter gas, it has a significantly higher flame rate, a wider flammable range and burns at a higher temperature and consequently requires specially designed and tested equipment and components. To address these challenges, SIT is developing a new product called Sigma – generation H, which has already been assessed as compliant for use with hydrogen, both in terms of materials and functions, by the Notified Body KIWA. The technological collaboration with Bosch involves the creation of valves suitable for use with hydrogen to equip Bosch boilers whose prototypes will be ready in March 2020 and, once approved by Hy4Heat, will subsequently be verified in the field during 2021.
