Football, Serie A: Del Piero, Totti and Zanetti, ageless champions

The seasons pass, but the three great senators of Serie A continue to be decisive for their teams and choose the midweek round in unison to send a clear message: we are always here - Del Piero celebrates 700 games and gives his Juventus away victory and supremacy – Totti relaunches Roma's Champions League ambitions.

Football, Serie A: Del Piero, Totti and Zanetti, ageless champions

A Wednesday from (old) lions. The midweek round of Serie A, in addition to inflaming the fight for the Scudetto, third place and the relegation zone, has given this indication: cycles can end, like that of Mourinho's great Inter, or Mazzarri's Napoli in free fall, they can begin new ones, such as that of the new and unbeaten Juventus, ever closer to the scudetto number 28 or 30, but certain champions, regardless of their team's moment, never die.

This is what happened on this football Wednesday ad Alessandro Del Piero, Francesco Totti and Javier Zanetti. The three great senators from Serie A have sent out a message in unison: the seasons pass, we are always here. Almost as if on purpose, they chose the same evening, with their respective matches taking place at the same time: Del Piero with one of his usual tricks on a free kick brought Juve back ahead of Milan in the championship lead, Totti returned to scoring after 4 months, relaunching his Roma's ambitions to win a place in the next Champions League while the Inter captain was the symbol of the Nerazzurri's rebirth, winning again yesterday and not so far from that third place that he would save a disastrous season so far.

However, the most significant message is that of the black and white number 10, who chose match number 700 as a professional (and therefore with only the Juventus and national team shirts) to score a goal, the second in this championship masterfully played by a follower, that the fans will hardly forget: could be remembered as the Scudetto goal, the one that chased away the ghosts of a home draw with Lazio which would have been worth the counter-overtaking of Milan. Instead now, just six days from the end and calendar (easy) in hand, Juventus see the tricolor ever closer.

Just as Roma sees third place ever closer, taking advantage of Del Piero's goal that knocks Lazio out and the collapse of a Napoli at the psycho-physical end of the line to move to only 4 lengths from the Champions dream. Absolute protagonist Francesco Totti, captain rediscovered and acclaimed by the fans, who scores the decisive goal in the 3-1 win against Udinese.

Less memorable was Javier Zanetti's match: just one of the many positive performances in his infinite and glorious Nerazzurri career. However, moving: the years go by, the coaches change (many under Moratti's management), but the Argentine all-rounder remains the irreplaceable strong point of this team. Even when a coach three years younger than him arrives to drive it.
