Soccer: Will headers be banned in the US?

A group of American parents, worried about the health of their young soccer players, have taken FIFA to court to try to limit head play. Head injuries - especially concussions - are a burning issue in America: they are more frequent in American football and ice hockey but there have also been cases in 'soccer', as Americans call soccer. The class action lawsuit against FIFA has been filed in California, and concerns both the American soccer and football federations. Parents are calling for more protection against concussions, which can be more dangerous for younger 'skulls'. The appeal asks to limit the number of headers allowed for each player, and notes that the neck muscles of 'chick' players are weaker and are unable to absorb the impact of the ball.

The appeal does not request payments for damages suffered, but hopes that people who played football or other sports when they were young, and who could have suffered damage from the impact, will be followed up over time. Already, in ice hockey, many veterans have taken the North American league to court: they suffer the consequences of concussions, and they say the league has indulged in a culture of violence.
