British Airways and Lufthansa: stop flights to Cairo

British Airways and Lufthansa have decided to suspend flights to Cairo for safety reasons

The British company specified that the flights in question will be canceled for a week, while the German one should start flying to Egypt again next Sunday.

British Airways has attributed its cancellations to what it calls its constant monitoring of security measures at all the airports where it operates,"a precautionary measure with a view to further evaluation".

"We are constantly reviewing the security arrangements at our airports around the world and have suspended services to Cairo for seven days as a precaution, to allow us to make further assessments," a British Airways spokesman said. “The safety and security of our passengers and crew is always our priority and we would never fly an aircraft unless it is safe,” he added.

Two days ago, the British Foreign Ministry also updated the recommendations addressed to tourists who intend to travel to Egypt, speaking of "an increased risk of terrorism against aviation” and announcing “additional security measures for flights departing from Egypt to the United Kingdom”.

The decision comes at a time of growing tensions in the Middle East, tensions that have escalated since seizure of a British ship by the Iranian Pasdaran in the Strait of Hormuz, linked to the sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran. Cairo is about 2.500 kilometers from the Strait of Hormuz.
