Brexit, political earthquake: the Chancellor of the Exchequer resigns

In the government reshuffle wanted by Johnson, the Finance Minister jumps, who steps aside after receiving an ultimatum - Replacements also in five other ministries

Brexit, political earthquake: the Chancellor of the Exchequer resigns

Government earthquake in Britain. In the government reshuffle decided by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, skip the Chancellor of the Exchequer, i.e. the head of economic and financial policy. Downing Street has in fact announced that Sajid Javid has resigned and that the 39-year-old will take over in his place Rishi sunak, so far number two in the London Treasury.

A Johnson loyalist, Sunak is a fervent supporter of Brexit and was born in England to a family originally from Punjab, India.

How do you explain the turnaround? Officially, the replacement was not wanted by Johnson: Javid would have stepped aside after receiving the request to replace five among advisers and senior Treasury officials considered not entirely in line with the prime minister's staff on Brexit or on various economic files.

Johnson's goal is in fact to strengthen the government in a pro-Brexit sense, given the political battle that will take place in the coming months with Europe. The replacement of five other ministers responds to this logic:

  • Justice, Geoffrey Cox;
  • Productive Activities, Andrea Leadsom;
  • Urban Areas, Esther McVey;
  • Environment, Theresa Villiers;
  • Northern Ireland Department, Julian Smith.
