Brexit: the buffalo mozzarella DOP trademark is registered in the UK

The United Kingdom is the third country for the export of PDO buffalo mozzarella from Campania, with a percentage of 11,31% and a turnover of almost 12 million euros. What changes now with Brexit for one of the iconic Made in Italy products?

Given that until next December 31st the picture remains unchanged, pending the negotiations that decide future relationships, the Consortium for the Protection of Buffalo Mozzarella from Campania PDO, has moved promptly by registering the trademark «Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO» directly to Great Britain, thus obtaining its national protection.

Therefore, assures Domenico Raimondo, president of the Consortium, "buffalo mozzarella from Campania PDO will continue to be protected in the United Kingdom, even after leaving the European Union".

The operation had already started in 2018, when the request for national protection of the trademark was forwarded to UKIPO (the British Intellectual Property Office). The application was definitively accepted on 29 April 2019, obtaining the Grant of Protection, i.e. protection in the United Kingdom.

“We are dealing with a very important partner, which is why the Consortium has already taken steps in good time - explains the director of the Consortium, Pier Maria Saccani - to face the new scenarios. Therefore, pending the definition of the agreement on the recognition of PDO and PGI products, there will be complete protection of the denomination". in the event of no agreement on the consequences of EUTM rights, it will cease to have effect in the UK. In that case, however, the national registration will remain, by virtue of which full protection will continue to be guaranteed to the DOP buffalo.
