Brexit, M5S votes with Farage and Le Pen

The 17 MEPs of the 5 Star Movement, allies of the British nationalist Farage in the EFDD group, voted against the resolution asking the United Kingdom to activate the EU exit procedure "quickly" - Marine's ENF also says No Le Pen and Matteo Salvini of the League

Brexit, M5S votes with Farage and Le Pen

The choice has been made, now we must not hesitate or expect privileges that can no longer be had. European politicians all seem to agree. Almost.

Starting from the principle that the priority is to safeguard the EU, the European Parliament, meeting in extraordinary session after the Brexit shock, approved aa bipartisan resolution which provides for the rapid activation of the procedure for the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union and in parallel calls for the annulment of the British presidency, scheduled for the second half of 2017.

The plenary therefore agrees with what was stated yesterday evening by Angela Merkel, Matteo Renzi and Francois Hollande in the press conference held on the sidelines of the Berlin tripartite summit: "no time to lose" and the document released today represents a clear message for Cameron and for the various British leaders (from Boris Johnson to Farage) who instead intend to "act calmly" to try to minimize the repercussions of the referendum on London.

The resolution that "hurries up" Great Britain was approved by a very large majority: 395 votes in favour, 200 against and 71 abstentions.

Consulting the results of the vote, it turns out that there are the 17 MEPs of the 5 Star Movement who have decided to line up together alongside UKIP's number one, Nigel Farage, far-right party, Eurosceptic and one of the main supporters of the "Leave". In Brussels, the grillini are part, together with Farage, of the anti-EU EFDD group, and have therefore decided not to betray their "old" ally, despite the fact that the latter has already requested a divorce from the Union.

But the M5S was not the only one to vote against the measure. To say no, also the ECR Conservative group (to which the British Conservatives belong), but also the Enf of Marine Le Pen and Matteo Salvini and the neo-fascist extreme right of the 'non-members'. The United Left (GUE/NGL), which includes Barbara Spinelli and Curzio Maltese, is also against it. Among the MPs of the EPP, the Italian Fulvio Martusciello and the Italian-Swedish Anna Maria Corazza-Bildt instead said the text was "rejected". Sergio Cofferati abstained.
