Brexit, Ireland's thorn in the way of an agreement

Dublin calls for regulatory uniformity between Ireland and Northern Ireland in order not to lose European advantages but London struggles to accept such a request because it would mean having two regimes at home and laying the foundations for the reunification of the island - Monday May from Juncker.

Brexit, Ireland's thorn in the way of an agreement

British Prime Minister Theresa May will put the papers on the table on Brexit next Monday in a scheduled meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

The improvement in the price of divorce (between 55 and 60 billion euros) that the United Kingdom is willing to pay to the European Union is a good omen, but there are still hurdles to overcome on the way to an agreement that cannot be minimized .

The main loose cannon in the negotiations is the Irish case. Dublin raises its voice and demands regulatory uniformity on the island so as not to lose the advantages of being anchored in Europe. But the United Kingdom struggles to accept such a request because it would mean having two regimes at home (one for London and one for Dublin) and indirectly lay the foundations for a future sensational reunification of the whole island between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Ireland is a very thorny issue which Europe does not want to enter and which refers to the United Kingdom but, one way or another, the case will have to be resolved and the possibility of arriving quickly (i.e. by mid-December) at a general reconciliation between London and the Old Continent also passes through here.
