Brexit, 75% of young people for Remain

The elderly population of England, excluding the big cities, was decisive for the victory of the Leave (No was swept in London) – Young and Scottish were to stay in Europe – THE NEW YORK TIMES MAP.

Brexit, 75% of young people for Remain

Elderly population and deep England, as well as Wales, in favor of Leave; young people, Londoners, Scots and Northern Irish for Remain. Thus the vote map is divided according to demographic and geographical criteria. Particularly striking is the division of the vote, which involved over 30 million British with a high turnout, based on the first criterion, those of age groups: according to surveys by the YouGov site, almost three out of 4 young people between 18 and 24-year-olds in Europe wanted to stay, as did 54% of the 25-49 age group. But it was the older ones who decided, and clearly: 58% in the 50-65 age group and above all 64% of the over 65s no longer wanted to stay in the Union.

Even territorially, clear differences emerged: in the big cities, especially in London with peaks of 70-80% in favor of Remain in some areas, there is a desire for Europe, much less in rural areas, so to speak. An example of the phenomenon is Wales, overall in favor of Leave for 53%, but in the capital Cardiff, Remain has reached 60%. As far as England is concerned, the most pro-European area is, as mentioned, London, while the fiefdom of anti-Europeanism turned out to be the central-northern part of the country, particularly in the inland areas: in the area east of Leicester and Nottingham peaks of 70-80% have been reached.

The most pro-European of all (and it is no coincidence that the least "British") are undoubtedly the Scots: there the No vote was swept away with 62%, after the referendum to leave the United Kingdom in September 2014 had failed, with the pro-independence they stopped at 45%. Even Northern Ireland would have preferred to remain in the Union, especially in the areas bordering Ireland, the EU country on which the economy of Belfast and its surroundings depends: 56% had said No.
