Brexit: confidence collapses to 26-year low

In July, the British Consumer Confidence Index recorded the worst monthly drop in 26 years collapsing by 11 points to -12. In fact, to find such a negative datum, it is necessary to go back to 1990.

The most affected sub-index concerns precisely the prospects for the economic situation in the next 12 months, which even decreased by 19 points to -33. There was also a sharp reversal for the data concerning intentions to purchase durable goods, which dropped by 11 points to -2, while the estimate of the personal financial situation for the next 12 months recorded a decrease of 9 points to -1.

At the territorial level, the most pessimistic appear to be consumers in Wales (-21 points). A surprising result considering that the majority of the nation's resident population has expressed itself in favor of Brexit. Poor prospects also for the inhabitants of the North of England (-18 points) and Scotland (-14 points) who had voted in favor of Remain. The decline in central England (-3 points), in favor of divorce from the EU, was less marked.
