Brescia, photography dedicated to the pleasure of reading

“Steve McCurry. Light". The exhibition, curated by Biba Giaccatti and, for the literary contributions, by Roberto Cotroneo, is linked to the successful series of images that McCurry has brought together in a magnificent volume, which is also a best seller in the sector worldwide. But those that appear in that publication will be just some of the photos that will populate the larger exhibition that the well-known US photojournalist will propose in Brescia.

The review, open until 7 September next, is staged in the spaces of the Santa Giulia complex and presents about 70 photographs that portray people from all over the world absorbed in the intimate and universal act of reading. People are captured by McCurry's lens revealing the power inherent in this action, its ability to transport people to imagined worlds, into memories, into the present, past and future and into the mind of man. From places of prayer in Turkey, to the streets of the markets in Italy, from the noises of India to the silences of East Asia, from Afghanistan to Italy, from Africa to the United States: vibrant and colorful images document the moments of stillness during which people immerse themselves in books, newspapers, magazines. Young or old, rich or poor, religious or secular: for anyone and anywhere there is a time to read.

The photographs that pay homage to the written word will be accompanied by a series of quotations from literary passages chosen by Roberto Cotroneo, which will constitute a sort of parallel path, a counterpoint of words dedicated to reading which will accompany McCurry's shots to further involve the visitor.
A final section will present the books published in recent years with photos of Steve McCurry, even those that are unobtainable today, alongside the original photos that were chosen by the photographer for the covers and which are often the icons that made him famous throughout the world.
Images and words will be included in an installation designed by Peter Bottazzi, which will invite the visitor to rediscover an intimate and direct relationship with reading, but also with the images of Steve McCurry that represent it.

The monographic exhibitions dedicated to Steve McCurry, organized in Italy by Civita with the collaboration of SudEst57 have recorded an extraordinary participation of the public in recent years, recently reaching the exceptional result of one million visitors: a truly large and heterogeneous public, made up largely of young and very young people. Steve McCurry is a point of reference for this audience, which recognizes a way of looking at our time in his photographs.
With this new exhibition, Steve McCurry presents for the first time an unpublished selection of his photos which, on the thread of the universal theme of reading, spans over thirty years of his exceptional career.
