Brazil: first yes to impeach Dilma

Brazil: first yes to impeach Dilma

The special commission made up of 65 deputies decided overnight to continue the procedure for the impeachment of the president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff. There were 38 votes in favor, 27 against.

The process now passes to the Chamber, which by Sunday will have to establish in the plenary assembly, by a two-thirds majority, whether Dilma should be judged and possibly convicted of violating the tax liability law. If that happens, the process will continue in the Senate and Rousseff will be suspended from her duties.

According to the latest poll, 61% of the Brazilian population would be in favor of impeaching Dilma and 58% also of Vice President Michel Temer.

Temer himself ran into a terrible gaffe by posting online the speech he would deliver in the event that Parliament votes for the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff. The vice president's offices justified themselves by saying that "the speech was published due to an error caused by the mobile phone".

Temer would automatically assume the presidency if, after the House, the Senate votes to open impeachment proceedings against Rousseff. In his speech, released prematurely, Temer writes that "the mission is to calm and unite the country".
