Brazil: President accused of corruption

Brazilian President Michel Temer could end up on trial for corruption. Prosecutors filed a request for him to be indicted which, if granted, would make Temer the first sitting Brazilian president to face a criminal trial.

In the request to the Supreme Court, Attorney General Rodrigo Janot accuses Temer of having received a bribe of 500 reais, equal to about 150 dollars, from Joesley Batista, a repentant entrepreneur at the head of a meat distribution company (JBS) involved in a corruption scandal. Temer reacted by declaring himself indestructible: "Nothing will destroy us, neither me nor my ministers," he said at the Planalto palace.

In order for the president to be indicted before the Supreme Court, the authorization of two-thirds of the members of the Chamber is required. If this were to come, Temer would be suspended from his duties for up to 180 days during the trial. According to the prosecutor, Temer allegedly "made use of his position as head of state" to obtain the bribe.
