Brazil, the rock & roll business is growing

The Brazilian entrepreneur Roberto Medina created and organized the "Rock in Rio" event for 30 years, which since 1985 has become one of the most famous music festivals in the world. 2013 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the show which has had editions in three of the most important cities in the world and which will now expand further. According to a study by Exame, record profits are expected from the 2014 edition with a 50% increase over the previous edition. Next year Buenos Aires, after Rio, Lisbon and Madrid, will host the event.

A major source of profit in the 2011 edition was merchandising with the production of 350 items. That number will grow to 600 this year, including clothing, food and drink, and a special edition Fox model from Volkswagen. The festival, which traditionally lasts ten days and features both local and international artists, was held in 1985, 1991, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011. After “migration” to Europe, the mega-concert returned to Rio in 2011. Tickets for this event sold out within four days. Rock in Rio was also credited with stimulating the local music industry. The Brazilian entertainment industry Time for Fun (T4F) entered the market in 2011, raising 539 million reales. That same year, billionaire Eike Batista created his entertainment company IMX, part of the EBX Group and IMG Worldwide.
