Bpm has a new managing director: Giuseppe Castagna. The official announcement came late yesterday evening, at the end of a marathon day which saw the appointments committee meet, one after the other, then the remuneration committee and finally the decisive supervisory board – initially scheduled for the 15 but then slipped – who appointed the management board.
This is the last stage of a journey that began last December 21, when the shareholders' meeting in Piazza Meda expressed itself with a large majority in favor of the list "for the Bpm cooperative" presented by Pietro Giarda, elected president of a supervisory board which sees 11 out of 19 directors as direct representatives of the former Minister.
The match on the new managing director ended without too many twists and turns. The hypothesis of a return to Milan of Fabrizio Viola, a manager who was at the general management of the Bpm bank for four years but who in recent days has decided to remain managing director of MPS, has faded, the choice fell – as expected – on Chestnut.
By mid-afternoon, the top management of Muzinich, the management company where the manager has worked up to now, considered the matter to be done. To the point of issuing a press release to "congratulate Giuseppe Castagna on his new role at Bpm, convinced that he will be very successful in his new position".
The official note from Bpm arrived at past 22pm. A sign that throughout the day it was a matter of extremes above all to find an agreement on the salary to be allocated to the new managing director. No surprises even on the presidency of the management board, assigned - also in this case according to forecasts - to Mario Anolli, a professor at Cattolica sponsored by Giarda himself.
The other members of the management board are Davide Croff, Paola De Martini and Giorgio Girelli. The first inaugural meeting has been set for Tuesday, when the new management board will appoint Castagna as managing director (effectively limiting himself to implementing the indications of the supervisory board) and will attribute to him the powers envisaged by the Articles of Association.
