Artists' portfolio: Flavio Favelli, between memory and visionary everyday life

Born in Florence in 1967, lives and works in Savigno (Bologna). After graduating in Oriental History at the University of Bologna, he took part in the Link Project (1995-2001). His daily life and personal history are the themes that distinguish his artistic research.

In his works, physical and mental space are placed on the same pgiving rise to a visionary production that acts directly on the perception of the spectators. Old furnishings or objects of common use allow the emergence of latent emotions, revealing the hidden aspects of everyday reality. His works are collages, sculptures, installations in which recycled materials are assembled giving life to overlapping meanings. The object, no longer considered only on the basis of its function or as a decorative element, is therefore loaded with value, considered as the icon of a past everyday life. "I feel and believe that what I experienced in my past, a difficult family history, and my reaction to this – explains the artist – as well as still occupying my mind, is something generative. And also paradigmatic of Italian history in the 70s and 80s. Considering that this story is global, because Italy has always been a global country, then the new images and situations that I compose and recompose from this pantheon create different possibilities. I play a part which, in addition to being mine, belongs to a role which is that of the artist who makes, for example, what is biographical somehow become public. It is then up to the public to understand it. The function of the work, assuming it has or should have one, is that, if anything, to light a few sparks".

Exhibition activity

Definitely intense, both in public and private spaces, in Italy and abroad. He designed and built two functional bar installations at the MAMBO Museum of Bologna (2007) and at the MARCA Museum of Catanzaro (2008) and two public and permanent environments: Vestibule in the ANAS headquarters in Venice of Palazzetto Foscari (2005) and the Waiting Room in the Pantheon of Bologna inside the Monumental Cemetery of the Certosa (2008) which welcomes the celebration of lay funerals. He has participated in two Venice Biennials, the 50th (Clandestini curated by F. Bonami) in 2003 and the 55th (Italian Pavilion curated by B. Pietromarchi) in 2013. On the occasion of the last biennial (2017) one of his interesting environmental works - which took the form of a temporary shop "Universe” where a couple of improvised shop assistants sold small “unique” works by the artist for 20 euros – enlivened the lagoon, attracting many visitors. Also in 2017, simultaneously with MIART 2017 and throughout the period of Salone del Mobile, in collaboration with Fai, staged “Senso 80”, an esp projectositive site-specific  in suggestive space of the Albergo Diurno Venezia.
