Stock exchange, record September at Piazza Affari: who won and who lost

Record September for the Milan Stock Exchange. The main index of Piazza Affari, the Ftse Mib, closed its best month since the beginning of the year, consolidating the pink jersey for the Milanese stock exchange compared to the other European stock exchanges: over +4% in September, almost 40% in the last 12 months, around +18% in 2017. Since the beginning of the year, only the Nasdaq (+20,5%) and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (+25,24%) have outperformed the Ftse Mib, which is itself overtaken by two other Italian indices such as the FTSE All Share (+19%) and above all by the FTSE Italy Star (+38%) which has intercepted even more the Pir effect.

The savings shares of Unicredit took the lion's share in the last month of Piazza Affari, with a gain of more than 43% after Jean Pierre Mustier's bank announced that it will submit the conversion proposal to the shareholders' meeting on 4 October of savings shares into ordinary shares.

Considering all the indices of Borsa Italiana, the companies of the so-called Fourth capitalism are in command in the last summer month, i.e. the medium-sized companies listed on the main stock exchange, but also the small ones listed on the AIM segment, driven also and above all by the Pir effect, which has allowed a wave of liquidity on Italian SMEs since the beginning of the year. The quartet made up of Gefran (+90% in September, +354% since the beginning of 2017), Landi Renzo (+87% in September, +384% since the beginning of the year), Isagro (+49 % in the last month), Saes Getters (+45% approximately in September). Since the beginning of the year, Sintesi has been leading the platoon, with a real exploit: +765%.

Returning to the Ftse Mib, September highlighted five stocks above all: FCA, Yoox and Saipem are on the podium with a gain of around 20% for all three, with STmicroelectronics and Leonardo ranking just below at around 12%. It should be noted that, while FCA and Yoox have been in positive territory since the beginning of the year (FCA with around +74%), September is the month of recovery for Saipem: the energy stock is among the absolute worst in the calendar year, with -31 %. Only Netweek did worse, outside the FtseMib, with -78%.

In September, the worst stock ever was that of Nova Re (-69%), while looking only at the main basket, Atlantia (-1,5%), Ferrari (-3%), Luxottica (-1,9% ), Salvatore Ferragamo (-1,9%) and Telecom Italia (-1,5%): all the others closed in positive territory or with falls of less than 1%.
